Setting Attainable Goals VS Obsession With Making Money?

How To Avoid Obsession When Developing A Home Based Business?

Michael D Barrett

Did you know that there is too much of a good thing? Did you know that your home based business may become an obsession? While you may laugh at the latter, consider the fact that there are those who put in three times as many hours into their home based business than they did when they were working at corporate. Since many a would-be entrepreneur cites the wish to spend more time with friends and family, this appears to be oxymoronic, or does it? If that is you, are you working smart or just working hard getting ready to get ready and ultimately avoiding the changes that need to occur in your life to actually realize your goals and make it happen by taking decisive action? Have you written down your goals, developed a business plan or are you winging it?

Put Your Attainable Goals In Writing To Avoid Obsession and Attract Success

You might be wondering if goal setting really works. Let’s look at a study conducted with the Yale Graduating Class of 1953. They surveyed all students asking them if they had written goals for their life:
• 3% had put their goals in writing
• 97% had not written them down or had none at all!
Twenty years later, these same people were re-interviewed.
• The 3% who had written goals had 10 times the incomes than the other 97% combined!

There is NO DOUBT about it – Goal Setting Works! A goal is merely a dream until it is written down. I have watched friends get themselves into serious financial trouble simply because they did not put their goals for their business in writing and did not develop a business plan. In executing your business you must define short term attainable goals that truly inspire you, something that will push you to do whatever it takes to accomplish them. Goals keep you focused help you create your vision and will give you peace of mind as our unconscious mind is passive and will do whatever we consciously choose to do. If left on the default mode, our unconscious mind will simply repeat the life long patters and sometimes bat habits that we have taught it. Dream Big but at one and the same time, set and execute these short term goals that will aid you in realizing your long term goals dreams and aspirations. It is always good to be reminded that we are the only thing that stands between us and achievable success .Setting goals and jotting down daily victories and accomplishments will help to alleviate obsession with your home based business. Clarity and purpose in our life will truly be enhanced by disciplining ourselves in taking a few minutes every day to reflect and journal our accomplishments and writing them down. Most of us are visual and can benefit if we see our results in writing. In your reflective moments, you may come to realize, that there are unconscious blocks, distractions and limiting thinking patters that if left to themselves and not confronted and handled, could be a contributing factor in diminishing your desired results and could lead to discouragement. But we all know that for you: FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.

Here are the top five signs that your home based business has become an obsession:

1. You spend more time working for your home based business than you did working at your corporate job. Remember that this does not apply to the initial start up, a phase that may cover a time period of three weeks to three months. Instead, it refers to the day to day operations of an up and running home based business.

2. None of the long and short term personal goals you set when starting your home based business are being accomplished after a period of six months. If your children still have to go to daycare, or you and your spouse are still dining on frozen dinners instead of the home cooked meals you envisioned, then the odds are good that you simply exchanged one job for another may have neglected to reflect on your short term and long term goals to track your daily and weekly success..

3. Your home based business may be an obsession if it enters every conversation you have. This is especially true if your business is multi level marketing or affiliate marketing. If you find that every conversation you have somehow leads to the business, then it has transcended its function from being a means to an end to being the end itself. When short and long term goals are clearly defined, we become a lot less anxious knowing that we have taken the time to articulate them. By doing so, the need to obsess and worry about our business will diminish or will be eliminated entirely as we are more self assured and confident.

4. You are tempted to, or may already have, engage in increasingly financially risky schemes and deals in order to finance the business and help it to grow and get to the next level. If you are thinking of mortgaging your home to finance your business expansion or if you are maxing out your credit cards to fund a major ad campaign, you know you are going too far. However, utilizing a credit card or line of credit can be seen as good credit if not used in excess and is not putting you or your family at risk. Financial prudence is always recommended.

5. Even if one particular home based business or business opportunity is not taken to excess, the investment in any number of them at the same time or concurrently, or the constant involvement in the latest multi level marketing fads and Internet get rich quick schemes is a warning sign that you are not being a business persona but instead obsessed with making money on or offline.

Please remember that there is nothing intrinsically wrong with wanting to succeed with your home based business. However, if you are taking the chasing of your success too far, or if you find that none of the goals you have set for yourself have materialized after six months but instead you find that more and more you are compromising your priorities, then you may wish to consider either a different home based business, new goal setting strategy, or a return to the corporate world to keep your commitments to your family. The choice to succeed is yours. The buck stops here: make it so number one!
